1. THE ETCHINGS

These etchings were Nita Spilhaus' s first works after she left art school. She was already an accomplished etcher, and the etchings depict scenes of her home town of Lübeck.

While a number of collectors have one or more individual etchings from this folio, I have managed to track down only one complete folio of the ten etchings, in the hands of a single collector, and these have now been photographed, and are included below.

II. THE MAJORITY OF NITA’S LUBECK SCENES, IN THE ETCHINGS ,CAN STILL BE READILY LOCATED IN THE MODERN CITY TODAY

The five scenes below are virtually unchanged.

The following two scenes can still be readily visualised, but require a bit more effort and imagination, as changes in the surroundings (particularly the growth of trees) have made it impossible to capture the original view.

Finally this next scene is an etching which is not part of the 1901 folio, but was probably made at around the same time.

The scene is identical today. An image taken a few years ago has been chosen simply because a large crane was suspended above the Marienkirche in September 2022!
